AB To identify if the voluntary blood donors were willing to accept and
answer queries personally related--thus breaking their inhibited
behaviour. Subjects of this study were donors (1991-1993). Donors were
to answer a questionnaire before every donation. Of the 32450 donors;
22641 were voluntary & 10079 were relatives. Relatives were from States
other than Tamilnadu. It was observed that all those tested HIV
positive--28 in all--were relatives. 1. None of those tested HIV
positive have answered YES to queries related to previous blood
donation, drug abusing, homosexuality etc. 2. The study revealed
inhibited response. Less than 1% had answered YES pertaining to their
habits. 3. The main objective whether the donor was answering sincerely
was belied. a. We infer: risk of transfusion would persist despite
screening--donor in window period cannot be ruled out. b. The fact that
no voluntary donor out of 22641 was tested HIV positive raises doubt on
ICMR Finding: Tamilnadu most infected. c. Study indicates, sexual
education not sufficient for donors to realise importance of answering
personalised questions. d. Attempt could be made to identify the strata
of society that donated blood. That group may urgently be educated to
further reduce risk of transfusion.
